Pat Fraher - Define Eternity, pt. 1

Over the next few weeks, we will bring you this blog series from S.O.S advisor & NBA referee Pat Fraher entitled 'Define Eternity'. Watch this video to hear Pat explain his heart for this critical message.

A friend of mine has a phrase that he uses to provide instant perspective for people in their lives. It’s only two words, but very powerful:

Define Eternity.

He uses it to help people evaluate their current motives, ambitions and priorities in life. ‘Define Eternity’ assumes that the listener already believes in an afterlife, however, even believers rarely contemplate their eternity. Eternity is a difficult concept for humans to grasp, as we all live in a time-dependant world.

Let’s try to apply ‘Define Eternity’ for a moment. The definition of eternity is “infinite or unending time; forever.” Let that sink in for a while… Unending.

We need to first consider our beliefs about an afterlife to make this exercise worthwhile. If you don’t believe in God, Jesus, the Bible, or an afterlife; all I can say is that you had better be right!

If you do believe in God, Jesus, the Bible and an afterlife, you acknowledge that both Heaven and Hell exist.

Matthew 25:46 –

“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

In fact, nobody talked more about Hell in the Bible than Jesus. Hell is described in the Bible in detail. Mark 9:48 describes it as where “the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched.”

Now, I know that Hell is not a pleasant thing to think about, but here is where we need to tie together ‘Define Eternity’ with Hell’s existence. When you combine the realities of torment by being devoured by worms and unquenchable fire to the definition of eternity -which is unending time- it should be staggering.

This horrible scenario isn’t just for an hour, a day, a week, a month, a year… not even 100, or 1,000, or 10,000 years… it’s unending. Forever. Without end. Let that sink in…

My point is if you truly contemplate this, you should now have no other priority in your life than to avoid Hell and secure your eternity with God in Heaven. The good news is that all of the necessary instructions for eternal life are in the Bible. There is nothing more important in this life than securing your salvation.

What are you currently pursuing in life? Will it lead you to eternal life?
